Swelling Characteristics of Compacted, Expansive Soils

چکیده
Abstraet-The limitations of existing methods for the prediction of swelling behavior of compacted softs are examined. Both the purely theoretical approach and the purely empirical approach are found to be inadequate. The present study is based on a semi-empirical approach in which a model of swelling behavior is developed leading to equations relating swelling potential or swelling pressure of a compacted soil to its plasticity index, clay content and initial molding water content. The model is based on the concepts of the diffuse double layer, modified by introducing empirical constants to account for elastic swelling effects and other limitations involved in the direct application of double layer theory to real soils. The empirical constants are evaluated from the results of experimental investigations carried out on a large number of soil samples representing a wide variation of clay content as well as consistency limits. It is shown that the predicted values of the swelling potential and swelling pressure based on the proposed model agree closely with the experimental results of this study and those reported in the literature. Furthermore, the equations developed in this study are of a more general nature and appear to be applicable to a larger range of soil types than those previously published.

Investigation on Engineering Properties of Soil-Mixtures Comprising of Expansive Soils and a Cohesive Non-Swelling Soil
Soil is naturally occurring material that is used for the construction of structures except the surface layers of pavements. This naturally occurring soil may not suit the design requirements of ongoing project. So, soil is to be prepared to meet the requirements called soil stabilization. Stabilization is the process of blending of different soils or mixing of additives to a soil to improve ch...

Expansive soils swell and shrink periodically when subjected to seasonal water content changes. As a result, they are a constant source of problem in the design and construction of foundations. In this study, the behaviour of an expansive soil was studied through a number of experiments involving cycles of wetting and drying using three different water qualities. Laboratory tests were performed...
متن کاملBehavior of Flexible Pavements on Expansive Soils
This investigation discusses the findings on analysis results of a pavement structure constructed on a relatively expansive material consisting mainly of brown clayey silt in Tebessa, Algeria. Cores were brought to the laboratory from a piece of roadwork. Remolded samples were taken from subgrade of a deteriorated road. The soils were generally found to be of medium plasticity and of a medium t...
متن کاملTreatment of expansive soils with quality saline pore water by cyclic drying and wetting
Expansive soils can be found in many parts of the world particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. These soilspose a significant hazard to civil engineering structures due to its high swelling and shrinkage potential. This paperpresents the results of an experimental program developed to investigate the effect of cyclic drying and wetting on theswelling potential of expansive soils with variou...
متن کاملDamage to Foundations from Expansive Soils
Expansive soils owe their characteristics to the presence of swelling clay minerals. As they get wet, the clay minerals absorb water molecules and expand; conversely, as they dry they shrink, leaving large voids in the soil. Swelling clays can control the behavior of virtually any type of soil if the percentage of clay is more than about 5 percent by weight. Soils with smectite clay minerals, s...
